Character Building

For the past week I have been writing in most of my spare time and my "Space Rat" novel is really coming together. One aspect that I really enjoy is building a character and watching how they evolve through a course of events. Another part of character building that I really enjoy is describing the characters with have a mirror or reflection scene.

Like the following: Fred stands back and looks into the mirror his long brown hair picture frames his face and accents his dark eyes.

See that's sort of lame, its much more fun and creative if you can instead do the following: as Fred frantically runs down the hall his dark brown hair sweeps across his face covering his dark eyes.

In both sentences you describe some of the characters descriptions and both are accurate but one takes a little more creativity.

In a related note I have been really enjoying the podcast "The Secrets" by Michael Stackpole. His knowledge of writing and use of words is proving invaluable and I recommend that everyone get a chance to listen to him. Even if you don't enjoy writing, we all need to write talks, using his tips will help keep your audience awake :)

Well that all I have for right now.

Podcast's

I just wanted to take a minute to talk about a few Podcast's that I subscribe to.

The first one is a SciFi short story podcast called "escape pod". Narrated by a guy named Steve Ely, "Escape Pod" immerses you into a world where anythings possible and what you think isn't always what it seems. One thing I love about "escape pod" is that the stories range from 2 minutes to 40 minutes, and they offer a escape from reality.

The Second one is a history cast called "Hardcore Histories" Narrated by Dan Carlin. This sometimes long podcast is a great step back into the past of humans. From politics from the past to ancient wars, Dan Carlin always stays up beat and is interesting to listen to. He really makes you feel like your living in the time period in which he is talking about.

The Third is "Video Game Outsiders" Narrated by Michelle, John and Kyle, this cast lets you know about the different video games that are coming out or have just recently been released. This cast is a lot of fun and the three hosts really insert a lot of their personality into it.

The fourth and the last one I'm going to talk about today is "The Secrets" Narrated by Michael Stackpole. This cast is for the writer and is on of my favorites out there at the moment. Although if you have no interest in writing this cast really isn't for you. Michael is an accomplished writer with over 38 books published and 8 reaching the best seller list, he really gives great insight on what it takes to be sucessful and what to expect for first time writers.

So those are all the Casts I listen to that I have time to talk about for now. See you next time.

Space Rat

Well I have decided to revamp the Series of short stories I wrote into a novel. Space Rat which I originally had envisioned as a quick story which I could get out of at anytime has sort of got legs in my mind. I really like the universe its in, and I see it now as being a novel with a chance of it becoming a trilogy. My Dilemma though was the fact that I really wanted to write a good solid short story. Well here is my solution. I can use the Universe I created but focus on another not so popular character in it. So for those familiar with my "Space Rat" story, I could use a character on the Vengeance who is part of the "New Democracy of Earth" faction, show what he was doing when the ship went down. So that way I have more then one story going on at the same time, in the same universe. Star Wars has done very well over the years doing similar things. The trick is creating a universe that people love, if you can do that people will immerse themselves into it. That's all I have for now.

Nerd

For a while now I have been thinking about the word "Nerd". To me it seems like one of the most over used insults in the English language. Not only though is it over used but it is misused.

Now let me reminisce for a bit. When I was growing up and still to this day I have enjoyed activities that others have called "Nerdy" and have had people who claim to be my friends call me a "Nerd". But really is it that what I'm doing is "Nerdy" or that I'm a "Nerd" or is it that what I'm doing other don't understand?

Dictionary.com defines "Nerd" as "an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd." But many of that activities I pursue that many would call "Nerdy" are quiet the opposite. This whole thing really raises a bigger question in my mind though. Why do people feel the need to put down what others are doing when they are not hurting others? Are these people really so uncomfortable in their own skin that the only way they can make themselves feel human is by insulting others? I guess what I'm trying at is people should be able to decide what they like and what they dislike with out fear of ridicule.

In the year 2008 when their has been so much advancement in science and technology, much of it created and discovered by so called "Nerds" you would think that people would be over the notion that anyone class of people are better then others.

In closing, I know this post has been a lot of rambling and really has just brought us around in a big circle. But next time you feel the need to insult someone else, just because you don't understand what drives them or what their passions are, don't. The old saying of "sticks and stones" is false. Bruises and broken bones eventually heal, words stay in your mind forever and torment you.

Welcome to my New Blog

Hello Everyone, as most of you may know, or if not you will find out. One of my loves is writing. When I came across http://www.blogger.com/ I thought about it as a great opportunity to let everyone know whats going on in my life, also to get some of my creative juices flowing (that sounds kind of nasty I know). So I now get to rant, rave and vent it type format, which will make me feel better and most likely make you realize I'm sort of crazy. That's okay though because crazy people have way more fun then sane people do. Well I hope you enjoy my Blog, please leave me notes and Enjoy :)
